By Droux, Xavier

Hierakonpolis

, Settlement HK25, E-II-1.

2005–2006 : Hierakonpolis Expedition excavation.

Egypt (art. no. 28).

Date : Naqada IA–IIB

General range of C-ware production

Material : Nile silt (Painted)

Preservation : Sherd

Decoration preservation : Mostly faded

Preservation information :

The paint has mostly flaked off and was damaged by salt, especially on the outside.

Description

The paint applied on all the sherds presumed to have belonged to the same vessel is distinctively pinkish-creamy in hue.

Decoration

Remains of two oblique chevron-bands filled with parallel strokes; to the right is the possible extremity of a hippopotamus back-leg. Taking into consideration other sherds that likely belong to the same vessel, it can be suggested that a pair of chevron-designs were running around the whole interior of the vessel, with several hippopotamuses painted between some of the tips.

The outside it too poorly preserve to ascertain the presence of decoration, but by comparison with other sherds from the same vessel, there were likely parallel oblique lines.
