General range of C-ware production
Material : Nile silt (Painted)
Preservation : Fragments
Decoration preservation : Mostly faded
Preservation information :
Three mended sherds. The exterior surface is abraded in parts, and decoration there is only visible as faint ghost impressions on the red-polished background. Rim preservation: ca. 7%.
Description
The paint applied on all the sherds presumed to have belonged to the same vessel is distinctively pinkish-creamy in hue.
Decoration
A hippopotamus, facing right, is painted below the rim; the two ears are indicated at the top of the head and the animal has a short tail at the back; its body is crosshatched. In front of the hippopotamus is a chevron-band filled with parallel strokes, of which the upturned tip is preserved. Beneath is a seemingly similar design. Traces behind the hippopotamus seem to belong to another chevron-design filled with parallel strokes, and it can be suggested that a pair of chevron-designs were running around the whole interior of the vessel, with several hippopotamuses painted between some of the tips.
On the outside, faint traces suggest the presence of parallel oblique lines (top left to bottom right).

Comments
The drawing published in Hikade et al. (2008) was done before the mending piece was noticed and reattached. The rim may have been uneven, or the bowl may have been elliptical.
