2006 : Hierakonpolis Expedition excavation.Egypt (06-17).
Date : Naqada IA–IIB
General range of C-ware production
Material : Nile silt (Painted)
Preservation : Sherd
Decoration preservation : Mostly faded
Preservation information :
The paint is mostly visible as a ghost on the polished background. The surface is eroded in parts, which has destroyed part of the decoration, in paticular the head of the hippopotamus. Rim preservation: ca. 3%.
Description
The paint applied on all the sherds presumed to have belonged to the same vessel is distinctively pinkish-creamy in hue.
Decoration
The hindquarter of a hippopotamus that faces right is faintly visible; its body is crosshatched. Behind are the remnants of an oblique chevron-bamd filled with parallel strokes that are almost perpendicular to the band. Taking into consideration other sherds that likely belong to the same vessel, it can be suggested that a pair of chevron-designs were running around the whole interior of the vessel, with several hippopotamuses painted between some of the tips.
On the outside, faint traces suggest the presence of parallel oblique lines (top left to bottom right).

Comments
The drawing published by Hikdade et al. (2008) does not render the decoration as observed. The rim may have been uneven, or the bowl may have been elliptical.
