Description
The vessel is most likely an genuine antiquity, but dating to the late Old Kingdom, with its interior slipped and polihsed. The white pigment is unusual, bright white in places, grey or brown, darkened in others.
Decoration
Four scorpions are depicted in two pairs that face one another on the wall of the bowl. They are placed vertically, with their heads pointing toward the centre of the vessel, and seen in top view. Their bodies are crosshatched and their tails curl back at the rim. Their six legs are flexed, while a hook-like feature is visible at the tip of their heads. Additional lines are painted between the legs and head. On both sides, the scorpions are separated from one another by a group of three parallel, horizontal, wavy lines. Between the pairs is the same arrangement on both sides: two groups of three vertical, parallel wavy lines frame a vertical, crosshatched panel.
