Raymond Weill was a French archaeologist and Egyptologist. After graduating later than most - having had a first career with the military - he worked with William M.F. Petrie in Sinai. His doctorate focused on the 2nd and 3rd dynasties. Just over a decade after the discovery of the predynastic period by Petrie, he was keenly interested by the origins the of the Egyptian civilisation. He also worked at Coptos and Zawiet el-Meitin, where he uncovered a predynastic cemetery.
