John D. Cooney an American Egyptologist, was a graduate of Harvard University. He was a registrar (1933) and later assistant curator (1937–1939) at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, before becomind curator (1940–1963). He then moved to the Cleveland Museum of Art where he was worked first as curator (1963–1974), then as research curator (1974–1977). He served a director of the American Research Institute at Cairo (1952–1953).
