Elise J.  Baumgartel  ( 05.10.1892  -  28.10.1975 )

A German-British prehistorian, elise J. Baumgartel (née Goldschmidt) studied Egyptology in Berlin under Erman and Sethe. She specialised in the Neolithic period of North Africa and obtained her doctorate at Königsberg in 1927. She took part in the excavations at Hermopolis. The rise of the Nazi regime led her to leave Germany in 1934 for Paris, where she studied flints, and later for the United Kingdom. She became Assistant Keeper of Egyptology at the Manchester Museum and also worked at University College London (1936–1941). She later lilved in Oxford to work on her Cultures of Prehistoric Egypt, before moving to the US (1957–1964). She returned to Oxford to complete her reinvestigation of W.M. Flinders Petrie’s Naqada excavations.
