Bernard Wilhelm V(on)  Bothmer  ( 13.10.1912  -  24.11.1993 )

American Egyptologist born in Germany, Bernard Bothmer started his studies in Egyptology at the University of Berlin under Sethe but this was interrupted by the latter's death. He was appointed as an assistant to Schäfer in the Egyptian Department of the Berlin Museum (1932–1938), but his  opposition to the Nazi government let to his suspension. He fled Germany and eventually reached the United States in1941. He occupied different curatorial positions in the Department of Ancient Art of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1946–1954) and in the Department of Ancient Art of The Brooklyn Museum (1956–1982), with an interruption when he directed the American Research Center in Egypt (1954–1956). In parallel, he led an academic career at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
