Haworth  Jesse  ( 04.08.1835  -  23.10.1920 )

Jesse Haworth was a British cotton magnate. Passionate about ancient Egypt, he became one of the main financial supporters of  William.M. Flinders Petrie, allowing him to carry out excavations in Egypt without institutional funds.

The Manchester Museum benefitted greatly from his donations of Egyptian artefacts and contributions towards construction costs; he was offered the honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by the University of Manchester in recognition to his support. He bequeathed his private collection of Egyptian Antiquities to the museum.
