Date : Naqada IID

Listed date is Naqada III, but based on stylistic parallels can be dated to Naqada IID more accurately. No provenance listed

Preservation : Almost complete

Decoration preservation : Partly lost

Preservation information :

Missing eye inlays. Substantial wear on rim makes it somewhat unclear if it was once lipped. Carved legs preserved.

Description

Seated frog-shaped vessel. Made of a brown stone striped with dark grey bands. It is unclear, due to damage, whether the rim once had a lip or was always flat, as it is now. Lug handles are horizontal and sit halfway up on the sides of the vessel.

Decoration

The vessel has carved legs with little detail in the incisions. It sits on its front legs, which go high up the body of the vessel and protrude slightly. The back legs exist but are indistinct. Eye inlays were once present but are lost. Eye sockets look forward and up.
