New York, Brooklyn Museum, 70.91.4.

Date : Naqada IID

Item lacks provenance, but stylistic parallels mark it as of clear Naqada IID date.

Material : Serpentine

Preservation : Almost complete

Decoration preservation : Partly lost

Preservation information :

Several large cracks in upper portion of vessel but intact. Eye inlays lost. Toe incisions partially damaged. Leg carving, lug handles, and rim still well-preserved.

Description

Seated frog-shaped vessel. The rim of the opening has a flat-ledged lip and is located in the center of the vessel. The lug handles are placed high on vessel, about three quarters of the way up. The head is much higher than the feet.

Decoration

The carved feet and legs extend onto the bottom surface of the vessel; the toes, which only partially survive on the front feet, are visible when the vessel is viewed from underneath, not so easily from the front. The face comes to a somewhat sharp point and the holes for the eyes face toward the front and slightly to the sides.
