By Droux, Xavier

Hierakonpolis

, Cemetery HK6, Tomb 49.

2009-2011 : Hierakonpolis Expedition excavation.

Egypt (11-717; 09-1676; 09-1667).

Date : Naqada IA–IIB

General range of C-ware production.

Material : Nile silt (Painted)

Preservation : Fragmentary

Decoration preservation : Mostly faded

Preservation information :

Six mended sherds. The paint did not survive well on the exterior surface and on the slipped band on the interior. The rim is 92% preserved

Description

Only the outside of the vessel is fully slipped and polished; on the interior, this treatment has only been applied to a band at the rim.

Decoration

On the outside, a series of near-vertical, thick lines runs seemingly from rim to base.

On the inside, the surface is fully coated in white up to the level of the slipped band; on this band, we can identify a series of short, thick, near-vertical lines that run from the rim to the white-coated area. It is not clear that this motif of thick lines is present around the whole vessel: an erea may possibly be filled with small polka dots.

A concentric line decorates at least part of the edge of the rim.

Found in the fill of Tomb 49, this vessel likely originated in another context. Three fragment come from Locus 150, Square F12, from feature north of wall (2009 excavation).
