Material : Nile silt (Painted)
Preservation : Intact
Decoration preservation : Mostly faded
Preservation information :
The decoration is still entirely visible, mostly as a ghost impression on the shiny background.
Description
There is a black stain on the lower part that was created during the firing of the vessel, which likely touched another element, perhaps another vessel. The painted decoration goes over this area and was necessarily applied before the firing, since the black stain was impacted by the paint, that has now disappeared and left a mat ghost. The contact with the other element also caused the fabric to crack around it in a radiating pattern, without the vessel having broken.
On the interior lip, only a narrow band is slipped and polished.
Decoration
Below the neck is a concentric series of four upturned triangles on a horizontal line, each filled with two chevrons. Below is a continuous series of four parallel zigzags. In the lower part of the vessel is a further series of four upturned triangles, which are much larger than those at the neck; they are filled with four and five chevrons each; they stand on a double concentric line. There is an empty space left between the pair of concentric lines and the base of the vessel.
Inside the lip, two concentric series of closely spaced polka dots are painted on the slipped area.
