Dorian Vanhulle
Since 2024, Dorian is the Director and Curator of the Musée du Malgré-Tout in Treignes (Belgium). He holds a PhD in Egyptology from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) thanks to a fellowship of the F.R.S.-FNRS (Academia; Researchgate). His research focuses on the Egyptian Predynastic and Early Dynastic periods and on the Egyptian collection of the Royal Museum of Art and History (RMAH, Brussels).
His PhD dissertation (ULB, 2016) discussed the place of the boat in Egyptian Predynastic and Early Dynastic iconography and archaeology. Between 2018 and 2020, Dorian studied the collection of Egyptian antiquities formely belonging to King Leopold II and now kept at the RMAH ("Pyramids & Progress. Belgian expansionism and the making of Egyptology, 1830-1952"). The complete publication of this collection is planned for 2023. Started in October 2020, his postdoctoral research project (F.R.S.-FNRS) aims to bring "new perspectives on Predynastic and Early Dynastic rock art in Egypt (c. 4500-2600 BC)" through a diachronic and holistic analysis of the petroglyphs documented between Elkab and Aswan.
Guest lecturer at Namur University (Belgium) in 2018, he is a member of the Belgian mission in the Theban Necropolis (ULB/ULg; MANT), of the archaeological mission in Tell el-Iswid (IFAO), of the Elkab Desert Survey Project (Yale University) and of the Aswan-Kom Ombo Archaeological Project (Yale University - University of Bologna). In the context of these last two projects, he is specifically involved in the study of the figurative pre-pharaonic rock art.
